Scams & Fraud
Be vigilant online. Be aware of fraudsters and online scams.
If something sounds too good to be true it quite possibly is, ask plenty of questions, stay alert and make sure the person is who they say they are.
DO NOT make an advance payment for a good or item. The seller may be very good at convincing you that they have the good or item and will forward it to you on receipt of payment but then never send it. Paying through Paypal is no guarantee of the legitimacy of the advertiser.
Proceed with caution and use your common sense. Ask yourself, is this sale progressing how a sale would normally progress. Are they asking me to do something I am uncomfortable doing. If the answer to that is yes, don’t do it, check the legitimacy of the advertiser.
Never give out your personal bank or credit card details. West Country Equestrian will NEVER call you to check your credit card details or your bank details. If you receive a call like this please call us immediately on XXXXXXXX and we will verify whether there has been a problem with your payment.
Be very wary of people who offer to buy your horsebox / trailer / horse or pony in the first communication with you. It would be very unusual for a buyer to buy any large ticket item without seeing it first. Do not enter into a transaction with them until they have seen the large ticket item you are selling.
A buyer may over pay for an item and ask you to forward the balance on to an agent or another party. Never transfer a balance onto anyone, it may well be that the payment you received from the buyer by cheque or bank transfer is cancelled at a later date leaving you out of pocket.
Be aware of emails in broken language.
Trade in person with your purchaser. NEVER sell your horsebox, trailer, vehicle, horse, pony or any other valuable item without meeting the purchaser first.
Scammers are convincing and becoming increasingly clever – be alert to scammers
If you are unlucky enough to be the victim of a scam or online fraud report it immediately to Action Fraud You can fill in their online form which will take approximately 20 – 30 minutes or you can call them on 0300 123 2040. Once you have reported the case you will be given a national crime number. It would also be worth reporting the incident to your local police.
Have an unanswered question?
